Fall is the perfect time to order your bulbs for next year’s garden. In this lively “Tulip Talk,” you’ll learn everything you need to know about purchasing, storing, and planting tulip bulbs, along with clever ways to keep pests at bay. You’ll also uncover the fascinating history of tulips: from their origins as wildflowers in Asia, to their rise as symbols of power and, eventually, Tulip Mania.

Spring may feel far away, but August is the ideal time to plan. With a little preparation now, you’ll be rewarded with dazzling waves of tulips when the season turns, creating a living masterpiece in your garden.

About the Speakers

Kitty Cole, a Master Gardener (Class of 2025), grows more than 600 tulips each year. Inspired by the breathtaking displays she saw in Amsterdam, Kitty brings that same artistry home by blending tulip varieties, colors, and heights into unforgettable floral tapestries. She’ll share her proven practices for planning, planting, soil preparation, and how to sidestep common pitfalls — helping you create a tulip display that bursts with color and joy every spring. As a fashion merchandizer and real estate professional, Kitty brings an aesthetic eye to her role as master gardener.

Lisa Phillips is a Master Gardener (Class of 2025) has years of experience with spring flowers and show-stopping flowering trees. She will share tips for preventing pests that like to munch on bulbs and attack blooms. Lisa will discuss companion flowers to plant along tulips, for a truly stunning display. Finally, she will offer tips on how to water and display cut tulips. As a retired Research and Development researcher, Lisa brings a scientific voice to explain the underlying principles to help you grow beautiful blooms.
